In a multitenancy architecture, Salesforce puts a limit on storage for all tenants. And unless you monitor your storage usage you might run into situations where you have exceeded org’s storage limit. Once you have crossed it, you can either free up space by deleting data/files from your org or purchase additional storage. If no action is taken to mitigate the storage limit, the records would no longer be updated and processes will break down until the problem is fixed.
What are the Salesforce Storage Types?
Salesforce storage is divided into two categories:
- File Storage
- Data Storage
File Storage – Allocated space to store files
- Attachments
- Files home
- Salesforce CRM Content
- Chatter files (including user photos)
- Documents tab
- Custom File field on Knowledge articles
- Site.com assets
Data Storage – Allocated space to store records

- Standard objects – Account, Campaigns, Case, Contact, Contract, Leads, Opportunities, Orders, Quotes, Solutions, Tasks, Events
- Campaign Members
- Case Teams
- Email messages
- Forecast items
- Notes
- Google Docs

How storage is Calculated For Salesforce Org?
The amount of storage you get for each storage type depends on the Salesforce edition that your organization uses and how many users you have. For Example, if you have 10 users in your Enterprise Edition Org. Then, Data Storage = 10 GB (Org Minm) + (20*10) MB = 10.20 GB. File Storage = 10 GB + (2*10) GB = 30 GB
SALESFORCE EDITION | DATA STORAGE ALLOCATION PER ORG | DATA STORAGE ALLOCATION PER USER LICENSE | FILE STORAGE ALLOCATION PER ORG | FILE STORAGE ALLOCATION PER USER LICENSE |
Developer | 5 MB | NA | 20 MB | NA |
Personal | 20 MB | NA | 20 MB | NA |

Professional | 10 GB | 20 MB | 10 GB | 612 MB |
Enterprise | 10 GB | 20 MB | 10 GB | 2 GB |
Performance | 10 GB | 120 MB 20 MB for Lightning Platform Starter user licenses | 10 GB | 2 GB |
Unlimited | 10 GB | 120 MB 20 MB for Lightning Platform Starter user licenses | 10 GB | 2 GB |
Salesforce Storage Considerations
- Data storage and file storage are calculated asynchronously and your org’s storage usage isn’t updated immediately
- Person accounts count against both account and contact storage because each person account consists of one account as well as one contact.
- Archived activities count against storage.
- Active or archived products, price books, price book entries, and assets don’t count against storage.
